“If people knew what I was thinking and feeling – I would die!”
Of course, the more I keep things inside, the more I die a little each day.
I’m overwhelmed, my life is not going as I thought, and I have things in my past that no one knows about.
I feel so alone.
“Sure, I know of a counselor here in my small town.”
But I also know everyone else in this town personally or by one degree of separation. Either we see each other on the sidelines of soccer games on Saturday mornings or at the grocery store on Tuesday nights, or we attend the same church, or their mother was my high school English teacher.
It’s too small, too insular. I can’t imagine feeling safe telling a counselor here everything I’ve stored up over these last few years.
“The closest big town is too far away.”
Finding a therapist there just isn’t easy or convenient – so I put it off.
The more I think, the worse it gets.
I see no solutions!
Let therapy come to you.
The benefit of online therapy is that you can authentically process your thoughts and emotions in confidence with a trusted therapist.
You won’t run into anyone who might know you.
Schedule an appointment when it works for you and find a private space to talk that is comfortable.
You don’t have to sacrifice the help you need or the sense of privacy that comes from talking with someone who doesn’t already know whom you dated in high school!
Here’s how it works…
Online therapy can be via phone or video (Zoom).
If you are considering therapy via Zoom/video, you will need to download the Zoom app on your computer or tablet.
Have a stable surface for your device so that you don’t have to hold it, and it won’t move or muffle your voice.
Consider your environment and choose a comfortable, private, safe space for your therapy session.
Once you schedule your appointment, you will receive a Zoom link via email, and a reminder of your appointment will also arrive with the link included. Click on that link, and Zoom will open.
It is always best to check your video and audio settings before your session. We can communicate via email and troubleshoot from there if we have any technical difficulties.
Should you choose to meet over the phone, I will call you on your preferred number for your appointment. It is best to have headphones for your call and to be in a place that is quiet, comfortable, and lacking distractions.
When online therapy isn’t the best fit…
In-person therapy might be a good choice for you if you do not have a space where you feel comfortable meeting remotely or if technology just isn’t your thing.
Meeting in person allows for a more personal engagement and exchange. For some, it helps to feel more comfortable while talking.
I do not have a physical office, but we can meet in person at a neutral location, such as the Team Meeting rooms at the Topeka Shawnee Public Library. These rooms are private and soundproof for confidentiality and comfort.
Once your appointment is scheduled and you let me know you would like to meet in person, a room or location can be agreed upon and confirmed in a follow-up email. I will meet you there at the time of your appointment.
Time to call?
When you engage in individual online therapy, you commit to growth and are willing to investigate your inner world.
Before you decide to begin therapy, I believe it is important for you to know what you are getting into and start organizing your thoughts around what you want to achieve.
I offer a free 15-minute initial consultation via phone. This is often helpful to learn more about yourself, why you are seeking therapy now, how long you have been feeling discomfort, what you would like to achieve in therapy, and what barriers are getting in your way of achieving your goals.
Once we determine that working together is a good fit, we can schedule your initial appointment. Your session may be remote – via phone or video – or in person for those in Topeka and surrounding areas.
