Get it out of your head!
I love to paint and draw and dance and create music. These things help me make sense of my emotions and understand myself on a deeper level – the one that doesn’t think so much all the time!
Or talk so much! So much talking without understanding… it just doesn’t work for me anymore. I want to feel my body and hear its messages differently.
Why do we give so much weight to what happens in our heads? You’re not JUST your mind; you have a body, too!
Venture out into the world!
When you join an expressive arts therapy group, everyone begins with a day-long intensive that helps you connect to yourself and bond with the other group members.
As sessions continue, you’ll have the chance to get all your systems working together and on the same page. This is where you can move, paint, draw, and create music and community in a validating, synergistic environment.
We’ll begin group sessions by setting the intention – the direction for the group, our goals, and the foundation for a safe space to learn and grow as individuals and as a group.
You’ll be amazed at how interacting and just BEING with others can give you insights you would never have come up with!
Expressive arts combine all the creative modalities…
… sound, drama, visual, movement, and words.
In group, we’ll begin with one modality and slowly add others, deepening our understanding.
You’ll be led to explore all your senses and those parts of yourself without words.
As an expressive arts therapist, I will guide you along the way and offer a safe, comfortable environment to explore, create, and evolve as you develop greater self-awareness.
Just imagine it…
You come into a space where you see drums and percussion instruments around the room. There are cushions on the floor, music playing in the background, and art supplies tucked into boxes and drawers. You’re surrounded by smiling faces, all excitedly anticipating what’s to come.
We stand together in a circle, calling each other by name to the space where we will exist for a day – a space in time that is welcoming, respectful, and permissive. As we gather, we join our voices, singing long, draw-out As, Es, Is, Os, and Us. Our different tones and sounds meld together in harmony, increase in intensity, and then slide away as we each lose our breath.
We gather drums and instruments and explore the sounds – a cacophony of tones and beats. A strong, steady drumbeat emerges from the chaos. You find your rhythm and place in the gaps. Little by little, you discover your voice through your instruments. As a group, we find meaning, understanding, and connection as we entrain together.
We reassure each other that this is now a sacred, confidential space where we’re free to explore and be accepted.
Then the paper is unfurled and hung, paints and materials are unpacked, and we find expression in the visual arts. Creating a tangible third, we explore its messages and voice through the written and spoken word.
